17-Year Cicadas to Emerge in North Carolina
Cicadas Expected to Create Intense Noise in Localized Areas
Emergence Year for Brood XIX
This year marks an emergence year for the 17-year cicadas, Brood XIX. These cicadas are expected to emerge in North Carolina, and experts are predicting that certain areas could experience noise levels comparable to jackhammers.
The range of Brood XIX cicadas within North Carolina extends over fewer than a fifth of the state's counties. However, in those areas where they do emerge, the cicadas can be extremely loud.
The 17-year cicadas are part of a group of periodical cicadas that emerge every 13 or 17 years. The cicadas spend most of their lives underground, feeding on the roots of trees. When they emerge, they shed their exoskeletons and spend several weeks above ground mating and laying eggs.
The noise produced by the cicadas is caused by the males singing to attract females. The males have a special organ called a tymbal that produces a loud, buzzing sound.
