Russia Depleted of Ground Troops
According to leaked intelligence obtained by ZDFheute, Russia has lost a staggering 87% of its active ground forces that were deployed at the start of its invasion of Ukraine. This represents a significant blow to the Russian military and raises questions about the Kremlin's ability to sustain its operations in the conflict.
The leaked overview, dated March 1, also indicates that Ukraine has inflicted heavy casualties on Russian forces, with an estimated 16,000 to 17,500 soldiers killed. The Ukrainian military has made significant gains in recent weeks, recapturing several towns and villages in the eastern Donbas region. Ukrainian forces now control more than half of the territory that was initially occupied by Russia.
In a further setback for Russia, Western-supplied weapons have reportedly proven highly effective against Russian forces. The leaked Pentagon papers, obtained in the spring, estimated that Russia has lost between 189,500 and 223,000 troops since the start of the war, including up to 40,000 killed in action.
